5. Today's Embedded Networks

Updating the code in each microcontroller must often be done at the micro's physical location. Compatibility issues with the network and the custom GUI interface can occur

Each workstation has a custom-built GUI that is built upon the machine's operating system. The GUI's stability, therefore, relies heavily upon the inherent stability of the OS. Any change to the GUI's interoperability with the network, or the way it handles network data, could require modification of the embedded code as well.

The 3rd point of SW maintenance is the network drivers in both the micro & the workstations. Compatibility must be maintained regardless of any other changes to the system

Control Systems Maintenance

System updating & maintenance is performed at multiple locations - at each microcontroller & each workstation. The workstation's custom GUI is weakest link in this system in terms of dollars and ease-of-use. Operator training on the GUI is often required. The GUI relies on the stability of the operating system of the computer. In addition, lack of standards has resulted in a diverse range of incompatible networked systems.
