USB Microcontrollers Introduced by ST-Microelectronics

Company:

ST-Microelectronics

Category:

New Products

Date:

24-May-2000

GENEVA--(St-Microelectronics)--May 24, 2000-- ST-Microelectronics today announced that it has enlarged both its ST9 and ST7 lines of 8-bit microcontrollers with additional products that carry an integrated Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface. These latest microcontrollers, the ST92163 and ST7263, expand the choices that embedded system designers have for cutting the cost and time-to-market of products that carry the increasingly popular USB interface. In addition to complying with the USB 1.1 specification, the interface includes a 3.3V software-controlled voltage regulator, USB transceivers, and a serial interface engine with a direct memory access (DMA) controller.

Features of the ST92163 8/16-bit microcontroller include:

  • 20Kbyte program memory
  • 2Kbyte RAM
  • 240-byte register file that can be used as general-purpose RAM or as destination registers for arithmetic operations,
  • 12Mbit/s USB interface with up to eight functions and 16 end points including fully programmable buffer size & transfer direction,
  • On-chip DMA controller for data transfer between the USB buffer and the serial or parallel ports,
  • 3Mbit/sec SPI
  • 8-bit A/D
  • Dual-voltage operation (3V or 5V)

These features target the ST92163 for use in portable MP3 and other digital audio players and, more generally, on peripherals, such as Flash card readers and programers using the mass storage USB device class; and also fingerprint and smart card readers, protocol translators (such as a USB to fast synchronous serial interface) and other devices.

For applications requiring low speed USB, the ST7263 microcontroller offers an enhanced USB interface having three end points and fully programmable buffer size and transfer direction. Available with 4 to 16 kbytes of ROM or one-time programmable (OTP) memory, the ST7263 also includes an 8-bit A/D converter. Typical uses include gamepad, joystick, mouse and touch screen applications, or as an RS232-to-USB or I2C-to-USB translator in a wide variety of applications.

On-Chip Voltage Regulator
Both the ST92163 and ST7263 include a 3.3V regulator with a software controlled power switch that lets a peripheral device restart the MCU and, therefore, reinitialize the system.
In addition, an on-chip Low Voltage Detector ensures graceful start up without the need for external components. Both families are designed for high immunity to electromagnetic noise (Fast Transient Burst) and low EMI. To speed development, the families are backed by in-house and third party development tools, including a real-time emulator and C compiler, reference designs, and an extensive library of USB firmware.

Availability
The ST7263 is available now in ROM and OTP versions, in SO34 and SDIP 32 packages as well as in die form. The Flash version is planned for late 2000. Members of ST92163 family are available now in OTP version, ROM being planned for mid-2000. It is available in TQFP64 and SDIP56 versions.
