Texas Instruments Adds Embedded Flash to MSP430 Microcontroller Family

Company:

Date:

08-Sep-1999

Dallas, TX (microcontroller.com) - Texas Instruments, the leading supplier of Digital Signal Processors, has announced plans to add on-chip Flash Memory to its MSP430 16-bit microcontroller family.

Flash memory is a reprogrammable program memory array that permits programming new code in an already programmed device.

"The unique FLASH process we have used complements the low power consumption of MSP430 MCUs perfectly, giving system developers the advantages of reprogrammability without raising the power budget," said Glenn Mortland, TI's MSP430 Marketing Manager. "Now TI's MSP430 customers will be able to build energy-saving products faster and enhance them easily through software upgrades."

The MSP430 Flash Microcontrollers will be the lowest power flash microcontrollers available on the market, with a current draw of 350µA per MHz - so low, in fact, that an MSP430 system can operate for over ten years on a single battery.

The MSP430 already has a rich set of peripherals, including LCD drivers, 14-bit A/D converters, 8- and 16-bit timers, a hardware multiplier, and up to 32K of One-Time Programmable (OTP) memory. Software peripherals such as DTMF decoders, FSK modems, and digital filtering algorithms are also available on TI's web site for the MSP430.

"The MSP430 is a 16-bit microcontroller with superior low-power capabilities and an easy-to-learn instruction set." said Bill Giovino, Executive Editor of Microcontroller.com. "With high quality tools from Hitex and IAR, plus an easy to use starter kit, I expect to see a rapid rise in the popularity of this microcontroller over the next two years".

First samples of Flash-based MSP430 microcontrollers will be available in November 1999, with production volumes following early next year.
