AZ (microcontroller.com) - Microchip Technology introduced
the 8-bit RISC PIC16HV540 - the first low-cost 8-bit
microcontroller with an on-chip voltage regulator and high-voltage I/O. The PIC16HV540 contains an on-chip 3V and 5V on-chip voltage regulator that can accept input voltages from 3.5V to 13.5V to the regulator. This allows the chip to interface directly to 3V to 12V batteries (including automotive batteries), while still allowing the microcontroller to operate over a wide input voltage range as the battery voltage degrades. The microcontroller can also operate using unregulated voltage sources. The device has eight I/O pins that can accept input voltages up to 15V and can drive outputs up to a 15V rail.
