Motorola to License SST's Embedded Flash Technology

Company:

Motorola SPS

Category:

Microcontroller Memory

Date:

05-May-1999

AUSTIN, Texas/SUNNYVALE, Calif.- (Microcontroller.com) - Motorola Semiconductor Products Division announced that it will be licensing SST's SuperFLASH® embedded flash technology for future microcontrollers with embedded flash. Target processors for the embedded flash technology is M*Core, 68HC08, 68HC12, and MOT's DSP cores.

"Our research finds that the use of flash memory technology within embedded or semiconductor applications is growing dramatically,'' said Scott Anderson, corporate vice president and general manager, Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector. "SST's SuperFlash technology complements our own advanced embedded flash and process technologies allowing us to more quickly bring to market next-generation DigitalDNA™ solutions.''

The technologies that Motorola will license are SST's 0.50µ and 0.25µ embedded flash technologies. SST's SuperFlash technology is a NOR type, split-gate cell architecture which uses a reliable thick-oxide process with fewer manufacturing steps resulting in low-cost, non-volatile memory solutions with excellent data retention and higher reliability.

The split-gate NOR SuperFlash architecture facilitates a simple and flexible design suitable for high performance, high reliability, small or medium sector size, in- or off-system programming and a variety of densities, all in a single CMOS-compatible technology. SuperFlash technology is available to third-party customers through its licensed foundries.

SST also manufactures a line of 8051 microcontrollers with Flash. See related story.
