Motorola 68HC05 Microcontroller Developers to Get Free DriveWay Software

Company:

Motorola Semiconductor

Category:

Development Tools

Date:

27-Mar-2000

AUSTIN, TX - March 27, 2000 - Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT), in cooperation with Aisys, now provides the Aisys DriveWay software for the 8-bit 68HC05 microcontroller (MCU) family to its customers. Developers can now automatically build device drivers, boot, and glue code that meet their precise specifications through an easy-to-use point and click interface.

This version of Driveway software, which supports the 68HC05, is available for downloads from Motorola's web site.

DriveWay software for Motorola 68HC05 enables the fast and easy integration of peripheral devices into designs and eliminates the need to learn the internals of each 68HC05 MCU derivative, resulting in faster development of higher quality applications.

"Incorporating a 'smart' software tool like DriveWay software enables our customers to reduce the exhaustive time spent on low-level design details and devote more time adding value to their system," said Greg White, general manager of the Motorola Microcontroller Division. "We want to simplify processes and equip customers with valuable DigitalDNA™ solutions that make their business better."

The key benefits of the DriveWay software include an automatic assembly code generation for initialization code that automatically produces highly-tuned, fully-tested and documented code in minutes for each on-chip peripheral, while eliminating software, driver and initialization software defects. Designers can now concentrate on generating their application code instead of the MCU configuration saving valuable development time.

"This new offering builds on the strong existing relationship that Aisys has with Motorola supporting 32-bit microprocessors," said Nancy Chou, vice president of marketing for Aisys. "Now, even 8-bit microcontroller designers can realize faster time to market with the use of DriveWay software."

Another benefit is the point and click feature for setting up the peripheral devices. In developing initialization code and device driver interfaces, programming time can be reduced from weeks to minutes, resulting in a much faster time to market. DriveWay software is also designed to quickly confirm that an MCU can be configured for a specific application or suggest an appropriate one. It does this by selecting one 68HC05 from a group of 68HC05 MCU derivatives. In a matter of minutes, designers will be able to determine which 68HC05 provides the best solution.

The free DriveWay software for 68HC05s can be downloaded from Motorola's website. The first release of DriveWay software, available now, supports the most popular 68HC05 MCUs. Later this year, Motorola will be releasing DriveWay software for the 68HC08 and other MCU architectures. "This announcement is another example of Motorola's commitment to provide best in class tools to our customers," said David Perkins, president and CEO of Metrowerks, a Motorola company. "By partnering with Aisys, Motorola provides a world-class solution which helps our customers cut their cycle time and get to market faster."

Through tools such as the DriveWay software for 68HC05 microcontrollers, Motorola continues to make the design process easy with high quality, low cost development solutions, trained technical support from authorized distributors, product documentation, easy Web access to application notes, FAQs and numerous reference designs.
