CHANDLER, Ariz., and SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Sept. 28, 1999 — Microchip Technology Inc. and IAR Systems are developing a C compiler toolset to support Microchip’s recently announced PIC18CXXX 8-bit RISC microcontroller architecture. The new tool, the IAR PIC18CXXX Embedded Workbench, will be a fully integrated development toolset, including a full ANSI C optimizing compiler, macro assembler, linker, librarian, C-SPY C source level debugger/simulator and Integrated Development Environment under Windows 95, 98 and NT (Command-Line also supported).
The IAR PIC18CXXX Embedded Workbench will fulfill a need by many embedded systems designers for a high quality development tool to support this new architecture. This system will complement similar IAR Embedded Workbench products which support Microchip’s PIC16CXXX and PIC17CXXX families and will be compatible with the MPLAB Integrated Development Environment.
The new PIC18CXXX architecture is an enhanced RISC core that is upward compatible from Microchip’s Mid-Range PIC12C6XX and PIC16CXXX core and High-End PIC17CXXX core, providing a seamless migration path of software code to higher integration. The PIC18CXXX architecture offers up to two million bytes of program memory address space, a C compiler friendly development environment and industry-leading 10 MIPS performance at 40 MHz.

"IAR Systems is very excited about developing a
state-of-the-art professional development system for the PIC18CXXX family,"
said Mike Skrtic, product marketing manager at IAR Systems. "Not only does
the advanced architecture specifically lend itself to C, but the large amount of
program memory makes it possible to write some very sophisticated applications.
Given the high performance of the PIC18CXXX, IAR is writing the compiler from
the ground up to take full advantage of all the new features."
"The IAR Embedded Workbench has been an extremely popular development tool for our PICmicroâ architecture, providing ease-of-use, high performance and a user friendly GUI environment," said Kris Kuehn, development systems marketing manger for Microchip Technology. "The new Embedded Workbench for the PIC18CXXX complements Microchip’s existing MPLABä -C18 C compiler by providing designers with another option to better suit their development needs."
The two companies expect the release of the IAR PIC18CXXX Embedded Workbench by Summer 2000. Contact Microchip through any sales representative or authorized worldwide distributor or visit Microchip’s website www.microchip.com.
Through its focused investment in the embedded systems industry, IAR now occupies a prominent position in the market for tools used in the development of microprocessors. IAR´s Embedded Workbench, incorporating the DAOS (Different Architectures, One Solution) concept, means that a user only needs to learn a general user interface, regardless of which chip is used from the 30 or so for which support is provided. Furthermore, the code can be reused after changing over to a new chip, which results in considerable savings. Since it started operations in 1983, the company has developed a wide range of software design tools for programming various microprocessors.
