TCP/IP Protocol Suite & RTOS for PowerPC Board from US Software

Company:

US Software

Category:

Embedded Internet

Date:

18-May-2000

Hillsboro, Oregon, USA – May 18, 2000 – U S Software, a leading provider of embedded technology announced today that their USNET® TCP/IP protocol suite, SuperTask!® Real time operating system, TronTask!® ITRON compliant kernel now supports Motorola's MBX860 board with the PowerPC 860 microcontroller.

The MBX860 embedded motherboard integrates the PowerPC 860 40 MHz microprocessor, memory, and I/O technologies into the EBX form factor. Major features include support for up to 128 MB of EDO DRAM or standard Fast Page DRAM in standard 168-pin DIMM sockets, either parity or non-parity. The MBX860 is designed for the needs of communications and networking OEMs with applications such as wireless base station controllers and remote access hubs. Its design lets developers take full advantage of the MPC860's intelligent communications processor module (CPM) and DSP acceleration features.

The concept of MBX is to provide a small footprint embedded single-board standard. The MBX's form factor is small enough for deeply embedded applications, yet large enough to contain the functions of a full-embedded computer system. This creates a great opportunity for embedded system OEMs to standardize their designs and take advantage of off-the-shelf modules.

MBX860 is a low cost solution that provides a complete development environment for US Software's customers, and will significantly shorten their design cycle.

USNET® is a reentrant, real time TCP/IP protocol package that includes clients/servers, various Internet protocols, data-link layers and drivers. It provides drop-in support for many processors and tool chains and its compact implementation (about 25K bytes for most processors) is ideal for various real-time, embedded systems from industry control and telecommunication to digital consumer and internet appliances.

SuperTask!® is ROMable and reentrant and contains over 70 system calls. It is easily configurable, allowing you to minimize code space. SuperTask! includes a wide selection of services to enhance and simplify implementation of your embedded multitasking applications.

TronTask!® is a real-time operating system implementing the ITRON real-time kernel specification. It is designed for consumer products and other small-scale embedded systems where memory constraints and performance are critical. TronTask! is ITRON 3.02 compliant.

Pricing and Availability
SuperTask!® and TronTask!® for MBX860 are available immediately. Standard support for the product is 90 days, with additional support options available. In the US, a royalty-free license costs $8,000. Full source code is included.

USNET® for MBX860 is available immediately. In the US, the USNET SDK pricing starts at $7,500. Full source code is included.

About ITRON
The ITRON specification has become an embedded industry standard, used in end products ranging from consumer appliances to industrial control. ITRON specification compliant kernels have gained wide acceptance in the Japanese embedded RTOS market, with over 30% market share. ITRON specification has been implemented for numerous 8-, 16-, and 32-bit MCUs.

The ITRON specification attempts to define a new computer system environment. The specification has been designed to allow the user to create multitasking applications that are compatible across architectures and systems that support the ITRON specification. Function calls found in the ITRON specification will work in the same manner from implementation to implementation regardless of how the underlying system operates.
