January 22, 2007 - STMicroelectronics has inroduced a USB Software Developer Kit for their STR7 (ARM7) and STR9 (ARM9) microcontroller families. These Kits target engineers developing USB based applications.

The new kit supports all STMicroelectronics STR7 (ARM7) and STR9 (ARM9) microcontrollers with a USB interface, including the recently announced STR75x family.

Features of this new kit include:

  • Support for all USB tranfer protocols
  • DFU (Device Firmware Update) is supported, allowing the target application to upgrade application firmware via the USB interface
  • A "Virtual COM" demo (CDC class) allows RS232 emulation on USB for legacy software applications.
  • Driver library
  • Software demos include HID (Human Interface Device) mouse/joystick driver and voice/speaker/microphone demonstration

Despite the popularity of USB interfaces, software development is hindered by the complexity of the USB interface. Software development is usually focused on the three lower ISO layers: the Bus Interface Layer, the Device Layer, and the Function Layer. ST's new kit provides a free development tool to easily develop code for all three layers.

Code generated by the USB Development Kit is compatible with existing third-party software, including RTOS, device drivers, as well as existing compilers that support the STMicroelectronics STR7 (ARM7) and STR9 (ARM9) microcontrollers.
